Visco-supplementation Injections

Visco-supplementation including Euflexxa, Synvisc, Supartz, and Orthovisc injections, are given in our office to treat knee pain associated with osteoarthritis. These injections enhance the lubricating fluid of the knee and can be repeated every 6 months for pain relief, as prescribed by your treating physician. The following steps must be taken before we can start your injections:

  1. Once you agree to proceed with the visco injections prescribed by your physician, our office will order the injections through a “specialty pharmacy” which is designated by your insurance plan.
  2. Most insurance plans require that you pay your deductible / co-insurance in full before your order can be processed and delivered. Therefore, you may receive a telephone call or letter from the assigned specialty pharmacy to confirm your coverage. (Please respond to the call/letter to expedite the ordering and approval process). After confirmation, the pharmacy will ship the injections to our office. These steps are required by your insurance company and it may take the specialty pharmacy up to a month to process and deliver your order. We appreciate your patience.
  3. When your injection order is delivered to our office, we will contact you immediately to schedule the injection appointment(s). We cannot schedule your appointment until we receive your injection(s) from the specialty pharmacy. During your appointment, the injections will be administered by a Physician’s Assistant (PA) in our office as directed by your physician. In addition, we often use in-office ultrasound guidance for a more precise needle placement for the injection.

This process may take up to 4-6 weeks.
We will call you to schedule as soon as your injections arrive in our office. If you have any questions please contact our Injection Coordinator at (412) 369-4000, ext 332 or via email at injections@tristateortho.com
